Title StatementCoconut-based forage crops and goat production systems under Central Mindanao conditions
General NoteKabacan, Cotabato: University of Southern Mindanao, Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research Center,
Summary, Etc.The study determined the performance of breeding native goats kept in total confinement fed with para-centro soilage with and without concentrate supplement and of goats grazed in pasture under coconut plantation. The experiment conducted at the Animal Research Division of the Southern Mindanao Agricultural Research Center, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato from April, 1983 to September, 1985, inclusive. In Experiment 1, seven breeding native goats were fed with para-centro soilage with concentrate supplements. In Experiment 2, seven goats were grazed in improved pasture and another seven were grazed in unimproved pasture under coconut plantation. The breeding native does kept in total confinement fed with para-centro soilage with concentrate supplements significantly performed better compared to those breeding does fed with para-centro soilage without concentrate supplements in terms of body weight gain, average weight at breeding and after kidding, average birth weight and weaning weight of kids at two months old and average weaning rate from the first, second and third reproductive stages. Kid mortalities in the first reproductive stage of the breeding native does kept in total confinement fed with para-centro soilage with and without concentrate supplement showed no significant difference. However, in the second and third reproductive stages of goats, higher kid mortalities were observed from those fed with para-centro soilage alone. Experiment 2 showed that breeding native does grazed in improved and unimproved pasture under coconut plantation showed no significant difference in terms of weight gain, reproductive performance and preweaning performance of kids. This may be due to similarities fof grasses and legumes growing in each specified grazing area. Coconut yield (23.14 and 24.08 nuts/tree per year, respectively) in areas where goats were grazed in improved and unimproved pasture had no significant difference. However, coconut production showed a declining trend when goats grazed continuously for the succeeding years which may be due to the compactness of the soil and the old age of the coconut trees. Cost and return analysis of goats grazed either in improved and unimproved pasture obtained much higher net income of P306.90 to P411.65/head with a return on investment of 41.12 to 54.90%,
