Effect of chemical treatment on the control of drying degrades on round bamboo Yolanda L. Tavita, Josefina G. Palisoc
Physical Description
29p
Summary, Etc.
The effectiveness of using polyethylene glycol (PEG 1000) and sugar in controlling checks or splits in drying kauayan-tinik (
Bambusa blumeana
Schult. f.) and bayog (
Dendrocalamus merrillianus
(Elm.) Elm) poles was studied. For kauayan-tinik, the samples were soaked in the chemicals for two days, air-dried for two months in a ventilated room and then subjected to exposure test to simulate a cyclic wet and dry conditions. For bayog, the samples were chemically treated at different soaking period - two days for the PEG 1000 treated and four days for the sugar-treated samples. Subsequently, the treated samples were air-dried and tested as that of kauayan-tinik. Results showed the superiority of PEG-1000 over sugar as a bulking agent for preventing drying degrades in the two bamboo species.
