$a  A collection of approximately 1,400 selected plants of 6 of the leading varieties of abaca or "Manila hemp" was brought from Davao, Philippines to the Canal Zone during the summer of 1925. The achievement was the successful culmination of 2 years effort on the part of the US Department of Agriculture to establish abaca in the American tropics.
