Summary, Etc.
Several indigenous materials were tested in static experiments to determine their ethanol preference or adsorption capacities. Ipil-ipil wood shavings, sugarcane, bagasse, corn cobs, and activated carbon were found to be the most ethanol preferring materials. The primary criteria data which affected the final ethanoI concentration were carried out. Distillation studies using these local adsorbents as packing materials showed that the length of rectifier and stripper have to be equal, and a reflux has to be used. A prototype continuous ethanol distillator was designed and fabricated. Final ethanol concentration produced from this prototype apparatus ranged from 90-97% (v/v) with ipil·ipil yielding the highest. The efficiency of the distillation process in terms of ethanol recovery varied from 93.4 to 91.4%. Coconut charcoal registered the highest efficiency ratio. (Author's abstract)
