Further studies on the 'Bugtok' disease of cooking bananas
General Note
College, Laguna: University of the Philippines Los Banos, 1993. pp. 135-167. -(Sub-proj. III)
Summary, Etc.
"Bugtok" was caused by a bacterium, Pseudomonas solanacearum E. F. Smith.Cultural, morphological and physiological tests showed it very similar to the P. solanacearum causing "Moko" or wilt disease of banana. Further characterization confirmed that "Bugtok" isolates became highly specialized entering through the female inflourescence, thus typical wilting of plants did not occur. The movement of the bacterium from the inflourescence to the fruit was limited. The only symptoms of "Bugtok" detected on the undetached male buds were the dry loose bracts of the male flowers that hardly abscised, as opposed to those found in noninfected ones. The disease was transmitted through suckers since healthy bunches were obtained from suckers coming from infected mats but grown in a "Bugtok"-free area. The disease could be transmitted through insects, specifically thrips, as shown by the positive results of pathogenecity tests on bacteria isolated from them. Bacteria similar to"Bugtok" isolates were isolated from the weeds such as Euphorbia hirta, Elephantopus tomentosus, Portulaca oleracea, Crytoccocum patens and Helianthus annuus. However, pathogenecity tests yielded negative results. Bagging materials found as effective as cheese cloth but cheaper and more readily available were impregnated, perforated polyethylene bags, nylon net bags and polypropylene sacks. Early debudding plus sanitation was recommended as an alternative measure in areas where it is difficult to bag. "Bugtok" also naturally infected "Sabang Puti"
