Variety development of okra and squash
General Note
College, Laguna: UPLB, 1988. var. p. -(IPB-CA-RRDP-PCARRD Funded; Study 2)
Summary, Etc.
A total of 54 okra accessions were evaluated to select a variety with superior quality, yield and resistance to major pests. Two advanced lines namely, 86-4025 and 86-4026 had superior performance over the check variety Smooth Green. Other advanced lines identified with comparable performance were 86-4034 and Green Velvet. These could be used directly as an open-pollinated (OP) variety or in the production of F1 hybrids. Also, Hybrid 1 and Hybrid 2 were identified as promising. Among the recently developed experimental hybrids, CxG and AxG performed better than the OP check. At present, 42 advanced lines from F3 and F4 generations (22 and 20 lines, respectively) were generated by continuous selection with inbreeding. On the other hand, breeding of squash was done to develop varieties that are highly yielding, early maturing, resistant to disease and with acceptable fruit quality. In the 144 squash accessions evaluated, the major problem identified was the virus disease. However, the stop-gap varieties (Batac and Sampuso) showed susceptible reaction to viruses affecting cucurbits. In 1986, two accessions exhibited tolerance to squash mosaic virus (SMV). During the following year, six accessions out of 70 entries were rated moderately resistant to squash leaf curl virus (SLCV). Also identified was Accession 206 that showed combined resistance to SLCV and watermelon mosaic virus (WMV-2). The OP variety La Preciosa and a highly promising accession A-193-1-1 possessed superior yielding ability and SMV resistance. Potential varieties identified were DSH-1, La Preciosa and Sampuso
