Composition and trend of Thrips palmi Karny and its natural enemies
General Note

Summary, Etc.
The population and trend of Thrips palmi Karny and its natural enemies were determined on watermelon var. Sugar Baby for three cropping seasons at the University of the Philippines at Los Banos Experimental Station from 1986 to 1988. T. palmi consisted of more adults than immature stages throughout the study. The highest egg count was at 60 days after planting (DAP) and the lowest at 80 DAP. The trend of population build-up of T. palmi followed a similar pattern: initial infestation of the crop was at 15 to 16 DAP, population increased at 20 to 24 DAP, density peak at 40 to 60 DAP and population recession as early as 64 DAP to as late as 80 DAP. The predators' population was generally low compared to T. palmi. However, their population trends followed the same pattern with T. palmi. The natural enemies identified consisted of four bugs namely: Orius tantillus Matsch, Campyloma sp., Cyrtopeltis tenuis, Geocomis sp. near lividipennis; one ant (Tapinoma philippinensis); and six spiders. T. palmi infested several plants both of economic and noneconomic values. Of these plants, Amaranthus spinosus harbored T. palmi and its predator, O.tantillus, throughout the year
