$aDuring the past few decades, new uniform varieties that have been developed at a given experiment station under a given set of ecological conditions have spread rapidly throughout many countries and have replaced the old mixed populations that were grown there, in some cases, since ancient times. Thus, in a comparatively short period the habitat of many uniform varieties has changed through the introduction of these varieties into new areas. Many different climates and soils often enforce different types of external adaptability of a given variety. Because of its significance in relation to genetic and agronomic problems, an understanding of the growth-development potentialities of a plant variety against the background of specific environments is extremely important. Rice phenology and weather data utilized in this study were obtained largely from records and reports of various agricultural experiment stations and weather stations of the United States and other countries. In assembling the material and information dealt with in this study, it was necessary to visit and correspond with many rice specialists, agricultural experiment stations, and weather stations throughout a large part of the rice-growing regions of the world.
