Thesis (M.L.S.)--University of the Philippines, Diliman
Summary, Etc.A structured questionnaire used to collect data covers some pertinent facts relevant to resource sharing and cooperation such as library resources, processes, policies and attitudes of librarians regarding networking. Of the 13 libraries surveyed, 12 responded. The facts gleaned from the responses to the questionnare were verified through actual interviews
The academic libraries under study have adequate resources both manpower and materials which they can share with each other. Out of the twelve libraries only four (33 percent) are understaffed while eight (66 percent) are adequately staffed with professionally trained librarians 42 (55 percent) of whom have formal library training
The study concludes that resource sharing and interlibrary cooperation among the academic libraries in Region V, particularly the 13 libraries in the cities of Naga, Iriga and Legaspi will materialize given the proper leadership. The environmental, societal, institutional and personal factors are present and can contribute to the establishment of a cooperative enterprise. Formal arrangements could be established in the areas of interlibrary lending, sharing of selection aids, cataloging projects, and serials indexing. Possible center nodes in the cooperative enterprise are Ateneo de Naga (Naga City), University of Saint Anthony (Iriga City); and Bicol College (Legaspi City). Specific subject specialization can be distributed among the 13 libraries surveyed as follows: AMEC, medicine; AdN, business and Bicol, history; CSSAC, agriculture; AU, sciences and Bicol, history and culture; BC, law, education and criminology; BCAT, technology; CSI, nursing and the others, on the area that the Region V Bureau of Higher Education has assigned as a development center
This descriptive research aims to survey the existing facilities and services of the academic libraries in cities of Naga,Legaspi and Iriga as prospects for possible library resource sharing and cooperation in the region
This study recommends that a strong leadership which will initiate the programs, formalize agreements and provide continuous channels of communication should be established as a cooperative effort in the academic libraries of Region V. Furthermore, funding for the libraries need to be augmented through increase of library fees and the tapping of funding sources
