Fifteen provinces and Davao City were surveyed to determine the occurrence and severity of the bugtok disease, establish its symptomatology, identify the causal organisms, and determine possible control measures. The survey revealed a wide distribution of the disease. In the field, the reddening of the core of the fruits with hardened, gelatinous, carmel colored pulp, and dry rotting and blackening of the fruit pulp were the two distinct symptoms observed. Results of the diagnostic tests on the bugtok isolates and four biotypes of Pseudomonas solanacearum showed that all isolates were gram-negative, H2S positive, aerobic, catalase positive and induced (HR) hypersensitive reaction on tobacco leaves.
