Title StatementYield loss due to taro feathery mosaic virus infection
General NoteBaybay, Leyte: PRCRTC, 1986. 45p
Summary, Etc.The effect of taro feathery mosaic virus (TFMV) infection on the growth and yield of taro (var. 'Kalpao') was determined using mechanically-inoculated and naturally-infected taro seed pieces. Mechanical inoculation of TFMV employed in both pot and field experiments showed a reduction in yield of taro ranging from 2.80 to 58% and 20.2-30.1 %, respectively. Inoculation of plants at the earlier stages of growth generally showed higher disease incidence and yield loss than inoculation at the later stage. Plants infected with TFMV produced more suckers than uninfected ones. However, taro plants naturally infected by TFMV in the field did not show reduction in yield. Likewise, the number of suckers produced by infected plants did not differ significantly from those healthy plants. Further, study should be conducted to investigate the mechanisms involved with latency and/or masked symptom characteristics exhibited by TFMV disease. Likewise, further verification should be done on the effect of using naturally infected plants with high disease severity under field conditions
