Title StatementTransmission studies on banana mosaic in the Philippines
General NoteProgress Report No. 1. Philipp. Journ. Agri 17(1-4):91-97
Summary, Etc.The banana mosaic is caused by a virus which may be transmitted to healthy banana plants by the cotton or melon aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, and by the corn aphid, Aphis maidis Fitch. The disease cannot be transmitted by the banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa Coq. nor can it be transmitted mechanically by needle pricks. As reproduced artificially, the incipient symptoms of the disease are light yellowish dot-like streaks on the unopened or newly expanded leaf. These appeared 16-25 days and 21-41 days after the viruliferous Aphis gossypii and A. maidis, respectively, had been allowed to feed on healthy banana plants. These dot-like spots elongated into narrow dashes with the original dot becoming distinct. Distinct motting, crinkling, distortion and reduction in leaf size may develop in the succeeding leaves on the groove or on the upper part of the midrib or on the petiole. Banana plants infected with the mosaic virus generally develop heart-rot, the youngest unfolded leaf showing the first sign of infection and then dies gradually
