Title StatementIpil-ipil (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit) seed gum as dry-strengthening additive to paper
General NoteCollege, Laguna: FPRDI, 1988. 107p
Summary, Etc.The potential of three ipil-ipil varieties (giant K-28, hybrid Gunningham and native Copil No. 2) was chemically investigated for the production of gum additive for paper. Two forms (extract and powder) of gum additive for paper were produced from finely ground seeds. Their dry-strengthening performance was compared with commercial guar gum (Amatex and Guartec), and unmodified and modified starches (Panda and Cato 210) using varied pulp handsheets, experimental paper and commercial paper. Based on the oven-dry weight of the pulp, an addition of 0.5% aqueous crude gum extract of giant K-28 seeds significantly increased the dry-tensile strength of pure sugarcane begasse and lauan pulp handsheets by 11 and 14%, respectively over the control. The effects were comparable to that of Guartec. An addition of 0.5% K-28 gum powder in aqueous suspension on sugarcane bagasse pulp handsheets increased tensile by 3% and burst by 10%. The effects were also comparable with the same concentration of guar gum. The ipil-ipil gum suspension at 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4% based on the oven-dry weight of the pulp, increased the dry-tensile strength of 30% unbleached kraft pulp (UKP), 70% kraft cuttings (KC), pulp handsheets from 9 to 12% over the control in both acid and neutral block. In a mill trial run, 52.8 t of class A and B commercial extensible cement bag papers were produced in a 24-hour run. The furnish consisted of a mixture of 30% UKP and 70% KC treated with 1% rosin, 0.35% ipil-ipil gum suspension (which replaced guar gum), and 2% alum. Using ipil-ipil gum as strengthening agent gave lower residual suspended solids than when guar gum was used. More savings on fibers, fillers, and cleaner whitewater will be realized with a substitution of ipil-ipil gum
