Summary, Etc.The Compendium of Practical Astronomy is unique. The practical astronomer, whether student, novice, or accomplished amateur, will find this three-volume set to be the most comprehensive up-to-date, and detailed single guide to the subject available. Replacing and considerably enlarging upon the outdated Astronomy: A Handbook, the Compendium is revised and expanded English version of the fourth edition of Gunter Roth's celebrated German-language handbook for amateur astronomer, which first appeared over 30 years ago. With amateurs and students and teachers of astronomy in high schools and colleges particularly in mind, twenty-one leading astronomers have worked under the careful editorship of Gunter Roth and the translator Wulff-Dieter Heintz and Harry Augensen to produce 28 articles that cover the length and breadth of practical astronomy. Volume 1 concentrates on instrumentation and reduction techniques but also includes a guide to the literature, a historical review of modern astronomy, and a detailed look at astronomy education and resources. The two companion volumes deal with the objects of observation. Volume 2 contains chapters devoted to eclipses, occultations, artificial Earth satellites, comets, meteors and bolides, and the terrestrial atmosphere, its phenomena, and its effects on observations, in addition to chapters on the sun, moon, and the planets. Volume 3 leaves the solar system behind and takes a look at stars, "ordinary" variable, and binary, as well as stellar systems and extragalactic objects. The set is rounded off in this volume by an extensive appendix containing useful astronomical data. The Compendium is an essential source for all those involved with practical astronomy
