Title Statement
Performance evaluation of promising banana cultivars under Davao conditions
General Note
College, Laguna: UPLB, IPB, 1987. pp. 171-174. -(IDRC-PCARRD Banana (Philippines) Proj.; Sub-proj. I
Summary, Etc.
Twenty-five banana cultivars were planted in an open field for agronomic evaluation. For leafspot disease reaction, tests were conducted under growing conditions. The diseases studied were black leaf streaks, Sigatoka, freckle and Cordona. Virus diseases such as bunchy top and mosaic were monitored. Sensory evaluation was also done. Significant variations in their suckering ability, pseudostem height and girth, days from shooting to harvest, number of fingers per hand and finger size among cultivars were observed. Yield performance was significantly different among the 25 cultivars evaluated. Abuhon gave the heaviest bunch. Interval between harvest was longer in cooking types than in dessert bananas. All the cultivars were susceptible to infection of rust, freckle and Cordona. Cultivars with genomic constitution of AA, AAA and AAB had high degree of susceptibility to Sigatoka and black leaf streak infections compared to those belonging to ABB and BBB genome. Bunchy top virus infection persisted and all cultivars were susceptible. Lakatan was the most acceptable cultivar based on sensory tests
