Principal names and synonyms of banana and plantain cultivars were listed and classified closely following the systems used by banana breeders of the Tropical Agriculture Research Services. In selecting the principal cultivar name, priority of usage as published by Blanco, Teodoro and Quisumbing was followed. Paul Allen's "Annotated Index of Philippine Musaceae" was also used. A total of 75 banana cultivars as well as their respective synonyms and distinct varietal characteristics were listed. These were divided and classified into pure Acuminata cultivars (AA and AAA; includes subspecies Microcarpa, Banksii, Zebrina,Malaccesensis, and Errans); Acuminata X Balbisiana hybrids, AAB genomes (Latundan/Mysore, Galamay Senora/Pisang Kelat, Ternate/Pisang Radja, Maia Maole, Horn Plantain, and True Plantain) and ABB genomes (Katali and Matavia/Bluggoe groups); Acuminata x Balbisiana hybrids, ABB genome; pure Balbisiana cultivars (BBB); and an unclassified cultivar from the Mountain Province called Katil
