General Note

Summary, Etc.
Surveys on symptoms and incidence of cucurbit viruses were conducted in backyard gardens and commercial plantations in Cebu, Bohol, Leyte and Samar to identify predominant diseases and host ranges caused by viruses among cucurbits. On the other hand, transmission (laboratory), host range studies (screenhouse), and resistance tests (experimental field) were done in the Department of Plant Protection at the Visayas State College of Agriculture. Thirteen virus diseases infect cucurbits namely: ampalaya and patola abnormality (APA), ampalaya leaf curl (ALC), ampalaya little leaf (ALL), ampalaya mosaic (AM), chayote little leaf (CLL), cucumber mosaic (CM), patola little leaf (PLL), squash mosaic (SM), squash leaf curl (SLC), squash yellow mosaic (SYM), upo mosaic (UM), watermelon mosaic (WM) and watermelon leaf curl (WLC). Of these diseases, ALL, SM and UM were commonly observed and gave significantly higher percentage infection. Majority of the cucurbit viruses had an average longevity in vitro (LIV) of three days with the shortest (one-two days) in ampalaya mosaic while the longest (four-five days) for squash green mosaic. All cucurbit mosaic diseases could be transmitted mechanically. Cucurbit viruses had a wide host range from vegetables belonging to Family Cucurbitaceae, Leguminaceae and Solanaceae. Ampalaya mosaic virus was the lone virus that did not cause any infection to other plant species
