$aTwo carabaos were studied as potential agents for the survival and dissemination of smut. One carabao was fed with smutted cane tops (Phil 56226) while the other was fed with healthy cane tops. The manures from the first and second defecations were examined for the presence of chlamydospores. Germination test after 24 hours showed a 65 and 70% viability of spores from smut whips and infested manures, respectively. However, morphology and spores viability were not affected during digestion. Smut spores from infested manure could only survive for more than one week after defecation. Spores from infested manure gave the highest percent infection (33.33%) followed by spores from smut whip (27.78%), mixture of infested manure (25%), and solution of infested manure (20%).
