Title StatementPerformance of SR grazing on native grassland (NG) overseeded with centrosema: Sustainable ruminant production under coconut plantation
General NoteLos Banos, Laguna: Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and D
Summary, Etc.The native grassland (NG) under coconut plantations dried up during the summer months, even if not stocked with animals. Under this situation, supplementation of concentrates to grazing small ruminants (SR) for three to four months was necessary to sustain their productivity. The overseeding of centrosema to NG under coconut shortened, if not totally eliminated the strategic concentrate supplementation. Along with proper pasture management and adoption of recommended SR production practices, sheep and goat production as a farm business enterprise under coconut plantation was feasible and viable. Observations showed that the raising of all sheep flock as compared to mixed sheep-goat was easier, management of the flock and pastures was simple, grazing/utilization of the pasture was more uniform, and meat production per hectare per year was higher
