Title StatementA comparative study on the efficacy of ipil-ipil seeds versus mebendazole in the treatment of intestinal ascariasis and trichuriasis among elementary students
Physical Description18-26
Summary, Etc.The study aims to compare the efficacy of ipil-ipil (leucaena leucocephala) seeeds and mebendazole as antihelminthic agent against ascaris lumbricoides and trichuris trichiura. Stool specimens of children in a rural elementary aged 7 years old and above were collected and examined for the presence of ascaris and trichuris ova. Egg counts were taken using the modified Kato-Katz technique. Subjects found to be positive for parasite were randomized into either ipil-ipil froup (leucaena leucocephala) or the mebendazole group. Repeat stool examination and egg counts were done to evaluate the efficacy of ipil-ipil seeds and the standard antihelmenthic, mebendazole. There were 55 subjects in the ipil-ipil group and 55 subjects in the mebendazole group. Subjects were comparable as to their age and sex distribution as well as the baseline ascaris and trichuris ova count. There was a significant reduction in both ascaris and trichuris egg counts arter treatment with either mebendazole or ipil-ipil. These indicates that both agents are equally effective in reducing the number of ascaris and trichuris ova. The antihelmintic effect of ipil-ipil seeds was found to be comparable with mebendazole based on ascaris and trichuris egg reduction rates
