Title Statement
Feeding of abalone juveniles with two species of
Sargassum
(
Sargassum cristaefolium
and
Sargassum polycystum
)
Physical Description
33-38. tables, illus. 23 refs
Summary, Etc.
The study conducted for over 75 days showed that 80% of the abalone juveniles preferred
S. cristaefolium
than
S. polycystum
(20%). Growth rate in terms of shell length, weight and survival rate did not differ significantly among the abalone fed with the 2 species of
Sargassum
. Likewise, the protein content of
S. polycystum
was higher compared to
S. cristaefolium
. Results of these study are important in the choice of suitable
Sargassum
species for feeds to be used on the grow out culture and the development of artificial feeds for abalone culture. More studies, however, should be conducted on the presence of growth stimulants or growth inhibitors in
S. cristaefolium
and
S. polycystum
