The wood preserving potential of arsenic-pentachlorophenate was conducted through the standard laboratory screen tests using four formulations of wood preservatives which contain pentachlorophenol and arsenic in an alcohol-water system. The formulations involved the dissolution of arsenic pentoxide and pentachlorophenol or sodium pentachlorophenate in ethanol followed by dilution with water. Five sets of wood specimens were prepared from sound, dried boards of Albizia falcataria (Moluccan Sau). Wood specimens were dried allowing arsenic penthachlorophenate to precipitate within the wood. The toxicity of the four formulations in diesel oil preservative against four species of wood decay fungi were evaluated through the laboratory soil-block method while evaluations against drywood (wood dwelling) and subterranean (ground dwelling) termites were done through the petri-dish and aquarium methods, respectively. Tests of retention, penetration, leaching and toxicities indicated that arsenic-pentachlorophenate formulations were comparable, if not better, than the reference pentachlorophenol dissolved in diesel oil. Arsenic pentachlorophenate formulations and the reference wood preservative provided adequate protection against the four test fungi and both species of termites during the tests.
