General NoteCollege, Laguna: UPLB, 1988. var.p. -(PARRD-ASSP Funded Proj.; Study 1)
Summary, Etc.One hundred twenty-nine traditional rice varieties collected from 1985 to 1988 were evaluated for their agronomic characters and reactions to insect pests and diseases. Farmers still kept glutinous varieties. Genetic erosion was observed to be increasingly critical especially in the irrigated-lowlands where traditional varieties were already replaced by high yielding varieties (HYVs). Preliminary results showed that out of 43 samples screened against blast, 20 were resistant, 15 were intermediate and three were susceptible. Thirteen varieties were resistant to stemborer but no variety was resistant to BPH 2. Most of the traditional varieties grown in an observational nursery showed susceptibility to rice tungro virus (RTV) at vegetative stage, but recovered at the later stage. Three varieties, Ilang-ilang, Banoog and Improved or Early Senador showed field resistant to RTV at all growth stages. Ten grams of each collected sample was sent to the International Rice Germplasm Center (IRGC) at IRRI for long-term storage. The rest were maintained and stored in a cold storage room
