Summary, Etc.
Thirty bast- fiber-producting plants of various sizes, from shrubs to large trees belonging chiefly to the families Malvaceae, Moraceae, Sterculiaceae and Tiliaceae have been studied in the institute for bast fibers yield. Studies revealed that bast fibers can be classified into a) non-layered and non-ribbon like strands or in discontinuous layers, viz., salago (Wikstroemia spp.) of the family Thymelaeaceae with exquisitely-silky white and highly-lustrous fibers, anobo (Abroma augusta) of the Sterculiaceae, kalulot (Artocarpus rubrovenia), and paper mulberry (Brousonetia papyrifera) of the Moraceae, with light buff to white and dull to slightly lustrous bast; b) interlacedor matted thoughout the full lenght of the bast bundles forming ribbon-like tangential layers or sheets in continuous strips, following the bark of the tree including the branches and twigs. This classification include anonang (Cordia dichotoma) of the Ehretiaceae, which yields finely matted filaments; malabuho (Sterculia oblongata) and sinaligan (Sterculia feruginea) of the Sterculiaceae with inherently silky and lustrous-interlaced filaments which are pliable and strong. Bast fibers of these species are highly in demand, locally and abroad for the manufacture of elegant hats, handbags, placemats and wallets. Malabuho was subjected to further investigation owing to its economic importance, demand and availability of suitable trees as source of bast fibers for local cottage industries. Key words: bast fibers, barks, retting
