Summary, Etc.Six rattan species, namely, Daemonorops clemensianus Becc. (alimuran), Calamus merilli Becc. (bugtong), Olaemonorops mollis Bko. Merr. (ditaan), Calamus ornatus var. philippinensis Becc. (limuran), C. maximus Merr. (palasan) and C. mindorensis Becc. (tumalim) were tested in terms of static bending, compression parallel to the grain, shear parallel to the grain and nail withdrawal capacity perpendicular to the grain. Limuran retained the highest bending stress with average module of rupture (MOR) of 630 kg/sq cm at 12% moisture content. It also exhibited the highest stiffness value with an average module of elasticity (MOE) in bending of 27,259 kg/sq cm. Tumalim, however, attained the highest average values in compression (350 kg) shear stress (62 kg) and nail holding capacity (34 kg). In static bending, limuran had the highest investment values with 50 kg and 2,664 kg for MOR and MOE, respectively. All the rattan species tested showed that mechanical properties generally increased with decreasing moisture content. The mechanical properties also generally increased with increasing specific gravity
