Title StatementThe dynamics of pilot projects on machine technology utilization for village-level agro-based industries
General NoteCollege, Laguna: UPLB, [1987]. 126p. -(PCARRD Proj. No. 89-374-21)
Summary, Etc.The study covered four machines used by La Union, Pangasinan and Iloilo rice-based farmers namely: Sipa pump, Tapak-tapak pump, Rice transplanter, and the Wet land rice row seeders. The study assessed the social and economic impacts on the use of the piloted machines. Farmers considered the sipa pump important in providing supplemental irrigationas well as for draining fishponds; the unit was cheaper than the centrifugal pump; discharge was high; no priming was needed; and the pump was highly portable. On the other hand, the tapak-tapak pump was easily accepted because of the following: certain parts of the pump can be devised that a farmer need not buy the whole unit; requires low maintenance cost; easy to operate; and reduces the cost of production. The mechanical rice transplanter's complexity in design was perceived by the local engineers as unfavorable to the small farmers. Local manufacturers found the machine difficult to fabricate because it has too many parts. The use of the wet land rice row seeder (both the spiked roller and drum seeder) made their adoption more of a gamble rather than an insurance for a good harvest. The impact of the implements were beneficial, such as: increased labor and land productivity; greater cropping intensity which generated employment, thus, reduced underemployment and unemployment in the rural areas; and increased farmers' income. The study gave some recommendations in piloting machine technology utilization
