Summary, Etc.
It is over ten years since the first edition of this book, which was then called Fundamentals of Physical Geography. It has proved extremely popular in that time, with a Canadian edition appearing as well as many reprints. Although the basic philosophy of the first edition still prevails, we have been very conscious of the need to update the text and its illustrations. Unfortunately, severe demands on our time, such as Teaching Quality Assessments, Research Assessment Exercises and the need to bring in money to research groups have prevented the two original authors revising the first edition. To ensure the book retained its popularity through the appearance of a second edition, we are delighted to welcome Ken Addison of the Universities of Wolverhampton and Oxford and Ken Atkinson of the University of Leeds to the writing team. With their skills and expertise, we have been able to prepare a completely new version of the book which we hope will continue to appeal to large numbers of sixth form and University geography students in the way that the previous edition has done. The second edition presents a total rewrite and a partial restructuring. The first edition aimed at bringing together an appropriate foundation for the various ' -ologies' , such as climatology, hydrology, geomorphology, etc., so that those interested could step more easily into their selected specialisms. We stressed the system approach so that the links within the environment could be emphasized. In this edition, the -ologies have been condensed slightly, with hydrology being subsumed into chapters on climatology, geomorphology and the ocean, rather than being a separate section. In addition, a section has been added on various regional environments to reflect the new title of the book. A thorough knowledge of physical and biological systems and their scientific processes is necessary in order to predict and manage the effects of human development activities. In the modern world it becomes increasingly clear that the physical environment impacts on human activities and in turn, that human activities impact on the world ecosystems. As a result, we have taken a problem-solving approach to these environments rather than providing just a comprehensive systematic survey of each one. The choice of problems to emphasize is largely personal but concentrates on our perception of what are the most pressing areas of concern. We trust that they will provide a valuable demonstration of the practicalities of studying the physical environment in an applied manner. To improve the impact of certain topics we have used the idea of 'boxes'. Many chapters contain a box where a subject is discussed in more detail. Most of them are topics, which, we hope, will stimulate debate and discussion. A further change has been the preparation of an Instructor's Manual, which should proovide a more effective way of working through the key issues raised in each chapter, as well as including multiple choice and short answer questions to test performance. We hope that these improvements will prove useful enough to ensure that the book continues as a leading reference work on the physical environment into the twenty-first century.04
