$aSamples of ipil-ipil (Leucaena leucocephala) and ampalaya (Momodica charantia) fresh leaves were serially extracted with four different solvent systems to determine their effectiveness against round worms(Ascaridia galli) in chickens. The different solvents were: fraction A with chloroform: acetic acid (99:1, v/v), fraction B with chloroform: methanol: acetic acid (49.5:49.5:1, v/v), fraction C with methanol: H2O (1:1), and fraction D with hexane extract. Likewise, the fractions were screened for bioactive components using the thin layer chromatography.These fractions contained either of the following components: alkaloids, saponins, flavoniods, anthraquinones, cardenolides, and tannins. The LD50 of fractions A, B, and C showed that at 600 mg/kg b.w. none of the tested birds showed toxic reactions. However, two birds that were given fraction C of L. leucocephala showed difficulty in breathing, but recovered two days later. Fraction A of the two plants at ED50 showed potential anthelmintic activity with increasing dose. However, the percent efficacy of the dose tested was not as good as piperazine (control).
