Title Statement
Increasing the efficiency of chitosan bead formation
Physical Description
21p
Summary, Etc.
Chitosan, a bipolymer that makes up the shells of crustaceans, when formed into beads, is capable of removing heavy metal ions in industrial wastewater (Esteban et.al. 2001). It was proven that 2% (w/w) and 3% (w/w) were effective in removing lead (Pb (II)) and cadmium (Cd (II)) from wastewater. It was also said that chitosan beads were hard and time-consuming to form. This research is aimed at finding a more effective way of forming chitosan beads. Factors such as depth of NaOH solution and heat were tested for their effect on the speed of chitosan bead formation. Chitosan beads were formed using a simple alkaline coagulation procedure. To test for the effect of the depth of the NaOH solution in Petri dish, the normal setup had 10 mL and the deep setup had 15 mL. Chitosan solutions were dropped into these dishes. This was done three times for 2% (w/w), 3% (w/w) amd 4% (w/w) chitosan solutions. It was proven that the deeper the NaOH solution, the faster the beads formed although, the beads got stuck to each other. The test for the effect of heat also consisted of three setups. The hot setup was prepared by placing the test tubes with the chitosan solutions in a hot water bath. The cold setup was prepared by putting the test tubes in an ice water bath. The normal setup is left in normal conditions. The chitosan solutions were dropped into Petri dishes with 10 mL of NaOH each. Time of formation was recorded and it was proven that the hot solutions formed faster than the normal and cold solutions. This procedure was done for all three concentrations of the chitosan solutions
