Title Statement

Summary, Etc.
Cation exchange resins from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) were developed to remove heavy metals from prepared metal solutions. Three formulations of CNSL-based cation exchange resin (CCER) with formalin to CNSL ratio (vol/wt) of 20:100, 30:100 and 50:100 were prepared. Each formulation was further treated in 1:5 and 2:5 resin to H2SO4 ratios. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the six CCER formulations was determined and compared with that of the commercial resin (CR), Lewatit CNP 80. CR had a higher CEC of 5.90. That of CCER ranged from 2.39 to 3.13. The different CCER formulations were shaken with 34 ppm Cr solution for 1 hour to determine which can best remove heavy metal ions from the solution. CCER with 20:100 formalin to CNSL ratio and treated with 1:5 CCER to H2SO4 ratio gave the highest removal of Cr at 54.24%. This was selected for succeeding analysis. The selected CCER was more effective than the CR in removing Cr, Zn and Cu ions. At 9 hours shaking, the % removal of Cr, Zn, and Cu were 94.32, 99.77 and 99.52, respectively, while that of the CR was 8.35, 23.29 and 88.09 respectively. On the other hand, the efficiency of the selected CCER to remove Pb ions was comparable to that of CR. Varying the shaking time had no effect on the efficiency of the selected CCER to remove Pb and Zn ions. (Author's abstract)
