Baseline data for corn, sorghum, rubber, coffee, cacao and sugarcane for North Cotabato
General Note
Kabacan, North Cotabato: USM, 1982. 19p
Summary, Etc.
A total of 246 barangay captains from 50% of the barangays in North Cotabato were interviewed for basic information on extent of corn, sorghum, rubber, coffee, cacao and sugarcane production. North Cotabato is a corn producing province with 29,685 farmers cultivating 55,885 ha for corn. Only 14 out of 40,904 farmers produced sorghum with only 5 ha planted to it. Sugarcane was highly produced in Matalam with 4080 ha producing 31,000 t. Despite the presence of NOCOSIL in the province, the towns of Makilala, Midsayap, Pigcawagan and Pikit never produced sugarcane. Magpet had the largest area (2,000 ha) planted to cacao. Makilala ranked first both in coffee and rubber with an area of 2,407 and 6,893 ha, respectively. However, Magpet produced more coffee in terms of yield. Magpet had the highest number of productive cacao and coffee tree, while Pres. Roxas had the most number of nonproductive trees (57,275). Makilala had 485,707 coffee trees and 1,577,613 rubber trees. The most popular corn variety in North Cotabato was tiniguib while Excelsa and Trinitario ranked first for coffee and cacao, respectively. RRIM 600 was the only clone used by rubber planters in the province. Urea and Folidol were the fertilizers widely used by farmers in the province. Those who did not use chemicals for control were beset with pest and disease problem. A communication network is needed to readily monitor baseline data. Barangay captains should have the basic information regarding their areas of jurisdiction. Crops with low productivity should be subsidized by the government
