Title StatementFlood hazard and vulnerability mapping of Butuan City by Ma. Cecilia A. Monteverde
Physical Descriptionxi, 131p. figures, tables
Summary, Etc.Several barangays along the West and the East Bank particularly the alluvial floodplain of Agusan River in Butuan City are highly vulnerable to flood hazard due to its geographical location and its proximity to Butuan Bay. Based on the information gathered from actual interviews, surveys, topographic and geomorphologic analysis, the potential areas prone to flooding have been identified. Additional information such as population, critical facilities, the type of housing and other socio-economic data have been considered to identify the vulnerability of the human and built environment to the impact of the flood hazard. The hazard map highlights the main areas that are susceptible to flooding which shows remarkable geographical differences, the low-lying barangays having a high degree of exposure to flood hazard. The areas periodically affected by floods are overlaid with demographic data and the population affected has been estimated. Mostly residential, agricultural and commercial areas close to Agusan River are vulnerable to flooding. The major factor triggering flooding is due to meteorological conditions caused by high intensity or long duration rainfall. Other contributory factors aggravating flooding are due to human actions which include the constriction of the waterways, encroachment of natural drainage path by informal settlers, insufficient drainage system and urbanization. The result of the social survey is also presented in this study to assess the general perception and the level of awareness and preparedness of the local community to flood hazard. It should be noted that the result of the study is not intended to provide definitive identification of flood prone landscape but rather provide a preliminary indication of resources which may be at risk to flooding. In addition, this can serve as guide for general awareness and as a tool or flood mitigation efforts for policy makers and planners so that planned developments in less hazard prone areas or property protection ordinances can be adapted to the identified hazardous areas, and institute retrofitting measures for already developed areas. In turn, these flood mitiigation measures are absolutely necessary to reduce the damage if not eliminate the flood disaster from recurring in the future.04
