General NoteCollege, Laguna: UPLB, 1985. 157p. -(PCARRD-ASSP Funded)
Summary, Etc.The study was conducted among "nutritionally at risk" population groups that included: landless agricultural laborers, subsistence fishermen, marginal farmers and the urban poor. Among the 400 households surveyed, the area available or being utilized for home gardens ranged from 10 to 120 sq m. Majority, however, were below 50 sq m where almost all crops grown were indigenous crops. The factors affecting people's involvement in home gardening were: interest of household heads, attitude of landowners, availability of planting materials and technical information, and diversity of plant usefulness. On the other hand, the unavailability of space, lack of suitable technology, lack of water source, the need for constant care of plants, and costly inputs were identified as the obstacles and problems hindering the setting up of a home garden. However, certain measure such as: the use of indigenous plants, drought and pest resistant crops, container growing and development of technology that uses primarily materials already available in the home or locality could possibly solve some of the constraints identified
