Title StatementEvaluation and management of selected legumes (peanut and mungbean) grown under randomly planted coconut in Region VIII
General NoteAbuyog, Leyte: AES, 1987. -(RRDP-PCARRD Proj.)
Summary, Etc.Two studies were undertaken. The first study determined the adaptability of ten mungbean and four peanut varieties/lines under shaded condition (under 30-40 years old coconut). The second study compared the suitability of a recommended cultural management scheme for mungbean and peanut tolerant to shade with that of the farmer's practice under coconut. Mungbean variety IPBM 79-13-60 and peanut variety BPI P9 performed well and were resistant to insect pests and diseases. Other high-yielding mungbean varieties/lines which were resistant to common pests and diseases were IPBM 79-9-94, Pag-asa 1, IPBM 79-17-79, IPBM 79-22-62 and IPBM 79-9-82. Coconut production increased by 38, 33 and 84% during the first, second, and third cropping years, respectively, due to the legume intercrop. The highest mungbean yield was obtained by using the farmer's variety and the recommended package of technology (POT). In peanut, the recommended variety (BPI P9) and recommended POT gave significantly higher yield. Nut production also increased by 85% in the second year due to the legume intercrops
