Title StatementPruning studies in mango
General NoteIloilo: MA, GES, 1983. 9p
Summary, Etc.Five-year old grafted mango trees were subjected to four types of pruning, namely: open center, formative, modified leader, and conventional. This was done to develop an "ideal" size mango tree to facilitate its cultural operations and to evaluate yield response. Pruned trees were relatively fast growers. The highest growth rate occurred three years after pruning. Flushing was observed three times in pruned trees in the months of January, June and October. Pest were severe in unpruned trees compared to pruned ones. The average number of fruits collected for three years did not show any significant difference from each treatment. However, average height of trees that were subjected to the modified leader was significantly higher than the control but showed no significant difference from each other. Although no significant difference was shown by the pruning technique in terms of growth and yield, the conventional method is still recommended to growers due to ease in implementation, less time and labor needed and the prevention of severe pruning
