Summary, Etc.In revising Nonparametric Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, I have included techniques which I believe are of special value to behavioral scientists. Because of developments in nonparametric and distribution-free statistics since the first edition, some procedures have been replaced by newer techniques and the coverage of topics has been greatly expanded. In particular, the coverage of k-sample techniques (Chapters 7 and 8) has been expanded and there is a presentation of comparison procedures. Chapter 9 on measures of association has been expanded significantly. A distinctive feature of the first edition was the step-by-step outline of application of each procedure to actual data. In preparing this revision, I have tried to preserve this aspect of the text. Although some of the examples used in the first edition have been replaced, others remain. The goal has been to provide a clear illustration of the rationale, use, calculation, and interpretation of each statistic. Because of the large variety of nonparametric procedures and the limited space available, it has been difficult to choose among methods. My choice has been based in part upon the judged usefulness of each procedure and upon an effort to minimize inclusion of tests which are similar. Some choices bear some specific mention: I have opted to include the Pearson chi-square tests for contingency tables rather than log-linear models. The reason is twoflod: I have found that students are often able to grasp the concepts of the Pearson tests more quickly, and there is some evidence that suggests that the Pearson tests have better small sample properties. I have also omitted multivariate tests and, except for a couple of instances, tests on sequences of behaviors. Although these important topics for the behavioral scientists, each requires extensive discussion to provide adequate coverage. Readers with minimal background in statistics can use the book; however, those readers will find Chapters 2 and 3 rather terse but complete. Readers who have had one or more courses in statistics can skim Chapters 2 and 3. One aspect of the book is bound to be controversial. In the first edition, scales of measurement were stressed throughout the book. In the revision, I have included an extensive discussion of measurement scales in Cahpter 3, but have "softened" most of the language concerning the importance of scales in the discussion of particular techniques
