Title StatementImprovement of containers for chilled fish
General NoteDiliman, Quezon City: UP, 1984. pp. 83-117. -(NSTA-UPS-IR "A" Proj. No. 8107; Study 6)
Summary, Etc.Nine containers (seven made of GI sheets and two of plexiglass) were designed to improve the existing styropore box in terms of insulation, hygienic aspect and durability. Their efficiencies were compared with the styropore box as control. The efficiency of sawdust as an insulating material in the absence of styropore was also investigated. The ice melting rates of the containers in 8, 12, 24 and 48 hours were measured. The thermobox (plexiglass) had the lowest percentage ice loss and lowest rate of ice meltage. The container using sawdust as insulator showed the highest percentage ice loss and could only retain ice and fish (1:2 ratio) for six hours. The styropore box was efficient until 19 hours with 3.4 kg capacity at 1:2 ice to fish ratio. At a 1:1 ice to fish ratio, styropore containers could retain ice up to 51 hours. It was also observed that as the GI sheet lining increased, the percentage ice loss in the containers also increased. The containers with GI sheet lining were slightly less efficient in insulation by eight and nine percent compared to the control but had better quality in terms of hygiene and durability. The plexiglass container was costly but had a projected lifespan twice as much as the styropore box. On a per year price basis, the styropore box was the most costly, followed by the foreign-made box. The modified container with GI sheet gave the best compromise between the styropore box and the foreign-made box in terms of annual return of investment
