General Note-(PCARRD Proj. No. 6.1)
Summary, Etc.This project aimed to operationalize a company-hosted integrated furniture processing center capable of producing highly competitive products for the local and foreign markets. The facility will be complemented by skills development program for workers from the company and the small shops in the vicinities. These small shops can use the facilities for their production requirements. A host company, Cedar Woodshop, Inc. (CWI) of Antipolo City, was selected as private sector partner. Through the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Rizal office, preliminary coordination was made with potential beneficiaries of about 200 small furniture producers from nine towns in the vicinity of Antipolo City. Potential suppliers of raw materials for the producers were also identified. It was unfortunate that towards the end of the first year, CWI decided to terminate its participation because of its transfer to Pampanga. Efforts were made to seek another host company within the strategic area and seven companies were contacted. None showed interest or satisfied the project requirements because of various reasons such as: business ompetition, product design protection, investment risks, inadequate space, no counterpart personnel and inadequate facilities. The major constraint was the lack of necessary equipment. This project had no provisions for the requisition of additional equipment and relied only the existing reources or counterpart financing from the private sector partner. In consideration of the problems encountered, it was suggested that the project activities be subsumed under FPRDI's Furniture and Handicrft Industries R&D Program which has a component on common service facility with similar goals, and, most importantly, the program is funded and has broader scope
