Title Statement
Economic aspects of carabao production in Southern Mindanao, 1983
General Note
Kabacan, North Cotabato: USM, 1984. 110p
Summary, Etc.
This study compared the existing levels of technology in carabao production. Interviewed were 405 farmer-respondents from Davao del Norte, South Cotabato (Region XI), North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat (Region XII). Results showed that the commonly adopted practices were giving water (100%), tethering (99%), wallowing (96%), giving feed supplement (73%), registering (66%), vaccinating (53%), bathing (82%), and training carabao as draft animal (53%). Confining (34%), cleaning of confinement area (20%), castrating (21%), shaving (30%), deworming (43%), ringing (49%), smudging (49%) and herding (44%) were practiced by only a few. High production level of technology was associated with the number of persons involved in taking care of carabaos, sex of carabao, ethnic origin (specifically Ilocano) and location. Carabaos in irrigated farms had higher productivity than those in nonirrigated farms. In Regions XI and XII, an increase in the use of biologics correspondingly increased the level of technology. In Region XII, the more crops the farmers raised, the higher was the level of technology adoption. Other social and economic factors identified were also associated with one or more of the management practices in carabao raising
