Title StatementUtilization of coir dust for water treatment and recovery of heavy metals
General NoteCollege, Laguna: FPRDI, 1988. 44p
Summary, Etc.The study aimed to developed a cation exchanger using resin from coconut coir dust by reaction with formaldehyde. The developed coconut coir dust cation exchanger was used for treatment of lead battery waste solution, water softening, spent chrome tanning liquor, and for recovering gold ions from solutions. The coconut coir dust cation exchange resin reduced the water hardness of a boiled feed water from a total hardness of 562 - 25 ppm CACO3. The lead in the waste water was more effectively reduced by the synthetic cation exchange resin when pH of both resins were acidic. However, after adjustment of both resins to neutral coconut coir dust cation exchange resin exhibited better performance than the synthetic resin. The developed product was also capable of treating spent chrome tanning liquor and recovering gold ions from dissolved ore solution. Chromium ions was reduced from 2175 to 312 ppm and 1389 ppm was recovered with HCL. The results of the study are promising, however, this should be repeated on a bench scale and later on a pilot scale. And since formaldehyde is toxic, ample protection must be done by the researchers by conducting the experiment under a framehood
