Summary, Etc.
The project consisted of three studies. In Study 1, the optimum mixture of materials for clay tiles was determined. The performance of these tiles in combination with local envelope materials for subsurface drainage was evaluated. Study 2 analyzed the effect of excessive soil moisture on the growth and yield of several plant varieties while Study 3 determined the influence of drainage systems on the development of some upland crops. The 10 cm diameter clay pipes with 9:1 clay-rice hull ratio were most practical for subsurface drainage. The envelope material most capable of removing excess water was rice hay. IR-36 rice variety showed high mortality and low yield when submerged in 15-20 cm deep water from transplanting to the twelfth week. IR-54 grew well when subjected to water depths of 5-20 cm during the first week. Mungo and soybean were able to withstand waterlogging once or twice a week without reduction in yield. Plant recovery and seed germination were higher in areas with drainage systems. Crops planted in areas with either open or subsurface drainage systems showed no significant difference in terms of growth and yield
