 The fifty fragments from the genizah of the ancient Synagogue of Elijah in Old Cairo, here edited, transcribed and translated into English, were acquired by the late Charles L. Freer in 1908, and now from part of the collections in the Freer gallery of art in Washington, D. C. They are in the main, Arabic texts (documents, letters, poetry, etc. ) written in Hebrew characters, dealing with various aspects of Jewish life in Egypt from about 1000 to 1500 A. D
