Title StatementDesign and construction of an improved solar water distiller
Physical Description16p
Summary, Etc.The group aims to make a device that utilizes the virtually inexhaustible energy of our sun to distill water. This device would save money and energy. Our group constructed two prototypes of a solar water distiller. The first prototype we made is a rust resistant and waterproof metal box with a removable cover that permits light from the sun to enter the distiller. The cover was made from glass with a metal frame and is tilted 15 degrees with respect to the ground. The device was painted black to maximize the absorption of light and the energy that comes with it. A collector was placed inside the distiller to separate the distilled water form the water being distilled. However, during testing, we found leaks in the distiller, and we found out that there was a problem concerning the distilled water being unable to reach the collector. The problems found in the first prototype were solved in the second prototype. In the second prototype, all possible leaks were sealed with clay. To maximize the collection of distilled water, the angle of the cover was raised and a glass strip was added to guide the distilled water to the collector. Preliminary testing shows that the prototypes give a yield of about five percent in two hours during noon. This means that five percent of the volume of water that was poured into distiller is distilled and collected. The relatively small yield is attributed to leaks and the inefficient collection of the distilled water and not to the process of distillation itself. Improvements on the distillers are still being made and tests are ongoing
