Summary, Etc.Field experiments for four cropping seasons were conducted at the UPLB Central Experiment Station to determine and compare the effects of time of ipil-ipil leaves application and inorganic NPK on some soil properties (physical and chemical) and yield of IR-36, C22 and UPLri-5 varieties grown under non-flooded condition. Fresh ipil-ipil leaves were gathered and applied at the rate of 10t/ha. Ipil-ipil leaves decomposed rapidly during the first weeks after application and gradually thereafter. Rate of decomposition depended on the moisture content of the leaf mass. The average soil organic matter content increased during the maximum tillering and then decreased continuously until harvest. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) in the soil also significantly increased with the application of ipil-ipil leaves either singly at seeding or in split amounts of 1/2 at seeding and 1/2 at 25 days after seeding (DAS). Available phosphorus in the soil increased the ipil-ipil application at seeding time and in split amounts. The amount of exchangeable potassium was similarly increased by ipil-ipil leaves and by organic NPK fertilizer. The organic matter content, CEC, available P and exchangeable K of the soil decreased at harvest. The population of bacteria and actinomycetes in plots fertilized with ipil-ipil at seeding and at 25 DAS were significantly greater than the unfertilized plots. Fungi population, however, was not significantly affected by ipil-ipil leaves application. Effects of the different time of split application of ipil-ipil leaves and inorganic NPK on the yield of the four rice varieties showed IR-36 had high and comparable yield with the inorganic NPK from ipil-ipil treated plots at 25 DAS for the dry season (4.48 t/ha) and the use of split application at 25 days before seeding and at seeding for the wet season (4.15 t/ha)
