Title Statement
Utilization of indigenous materials for the control of insect pest of vegetables in the backyard
General Note
College, Laguna: UPLB, 1988. pp. 18-44. -(PCARRD-ASSP No. 89-383-21; Study 2)
Summary, Etc.
Crude extracts of nine indigenous plants were studied for possible insecticidal effects. Gliricidia sepium (kakawate), Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco), Caesolpinia pulcherrima (caballero), and Tinosphora rumphii (makabuhai) extracts were found toxic to Plutella xylostella. Cabbage plants treated with kakawate and tobacco extracts, and makabuhai concentrate obtained 50 and 20% mortality of P. xylostella, respectively, 24 hours after exposure. Caballero was toxic 48 hours after exposure. The addition of Teepol liquid detergent and/or coconut oil significantly improved the toxicity of these extracts to P. xylostella and Myzus persicae in the laboratory and greenhouse, respectively. In field experiment, Tagetes erecta (marigold) and Capsicum frutescens (hot pepper) planted simultaneously with pechay gave significant reduction in insect population. Spraying marigold extracts was more effective than using kakawate or makabuhai extracts
