Garcia Physical Description 61-70 graphs, tables Summary, Etc.      The resistance of giant ipil-ipil against biodeterioration organisms under laboratory and field conditions was determined. Test against decay fungi was based on procedures in ASTM D2017-81 , while resistance to insects was based on sandwich and soil chamber methods. Natural durability was evaluated using test stakes exposed under field conditions.      Giant ipil-ipil's butt and middle portions were resistant and moderately resistant to Fornes lividus and Lenzites striata, respectively. On the other hand, these portions were resistant to Poria sp., and highly resistant to the three species of unidentified basidiomycetous fungi.      The butt was also highly resistant to the subterranean termites Microcerotermes losbañosensis Oshima and drywood termites Cryptotermes dudleyi Banks. The middle was resistant to the latter, and moderately resistant to the former. Meanwhile, both portions were classified as highly resistant to powder-post beetles (Minthea sp.).      Field test showed that wooden stakes from the 20-year old giant ipil-ipil failed in 3 years, which was the basis for categorizing the wood species as slightly durable. Preservative treatment against insect and fungal attack is necessary to prolong the wood's service life.
