Title Statement
Effects of plant combinations upon protection/stabilization of mined waste areas
General Note
Baguio City: FORI, 1983. 30p. -(PCARRD-FORI Proj. No. 639; Study 2)
Summary, Etc.
Eight plant combination treatments were applied at the mined wastes dumping area of the Sto. Ni?o Mining Company in Benguet to determine the best plant combination that could rapidly stabilize mined wastes area. Effects on surface runoff and soil erosion and the costs in the treatment applications were included. The study area belonged to Climatic Type I with an average annual rainfall of 2,503.57 mm, daily relative humidity of 84.6% and atmospheric temperature of 22 deg C. Revegetation of mined dumps using combination trees, shrubs, grasses and vines significantly reduced the occurrence of surface runoff and soil erosion compared to the control (no revegetation). Based on the over all performance of the various plants used for the stabilization work, alnus, Benguet pine, guava, kikuyo, mirasol and tiger grass were recommended for revegetation of mined dump area. Moist and shade-loving plants like chayote, trumpet flower, masaflora, wild strawberry and other experimental plants did not thrive in the study area. Invaders like Trema, Orientales and Ediptaralba grew four to five years after dumping. Combinations of alnus, Benguet pine and selected vine species incurred the lowest costs compared to the other plant combinations tested. Further studies should be conducted on the use of other native species and trees, and on how to improve microclimatic conditions, soil amendment and other cultural treatments that will enhance plant growth and development in mined areas
