Title StatementStudies on the manufacture of phenol-formaldehyde bonded particleboard using giant ipil-ipil
General NoteCollege, Laguna: FPRDI, 1988. 25p
Summary, Etc.Laboratory and pilot scale tests were conducted to determine the effect of surface resin of 8 mm and 12.7 mm thick particleboards on the modulus of rupture (MOR) and thickness swelling (TS), effect of core resin content on internal bond strength, and the effect of wax emulsion on TS and MOR. The 8 mm thick homogenous particleboards (45 x 50 cm) were made at varying surface resin content levels (4, 5, 6, 7 and 8%), core resin content levels (3, 4 and 5%), board density levels (600, 650 and 700 kg/cu m), and wax levels (0 and 2%). The 12.7 mm thick particleboards were made at three surface resin content levels (6, 7 and 8%). The optimum phenol-folmaldehyde resin content levels for the manufacture of particleboard using giant ipil-ipil were 4.2% (5% for surface and 3% for core) for 8 mm thick homogenous board, and 4.8% (6% for surface and 3% for core) for 12.7 mm thick fine surfaced boards. At these resin levels, phenol-bonded giant ipil-ipil particle boards have similar strength comparable to urea-bonded boards at eight percent resin content. The boards fall within the Type 15 (8 mm thick) and Type 20 (12.7 mm) classification of PHILSA. Liquid phenol-folmaldehyde resin of 40% solids may be used without adding catalyst and wax emulsion. Resin content had significant effects on the MOR of 8 mm thick boards and on the TS of 12.7 mm boards. Internal bond strength was also affected by resin content. Wax emulsion reduced the boards MOR and had no significant effect on TS
