Title StatementStudies on rhizobium isolates from tropical legumes of economic importance: II. Utilization of nitrogen sources
Physical Description77-84
Summary, Etc.Rhizobium isolates, C4, C11 from Centrosema pubescens Benth. (centresema); L5, L15 from Leucaena leucocephala (Lam) De Wit (ipil-ipil); M4, M5 from Vigna radiata (l) Wilczek (Mungbean); P3,_7 from Arachis hypogaea L. (peanut) and S13, S38 from Glycine max (L) Merr. (soybean) were grown in culture media containing 23 types of nitrogen sources. The nitrogen sources used were: NH4CI only; NH4CI and glutamate; NH4CI and 20 amino acids (arginine, alanine, aspartate, asparagine, cystine, glutamate, glutamine, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalamine, proline, serine, trytophan, threonine, tyrosine and valine); and NH4CI and 19 amino acids (20) combinations of minus one amino acid). Growth responses based on optical density readings at 420 mm were rated from 0 to 4. L5, L15, P7 and S13 scored 4 in all nitrogen sources. C4, C11, M5 and P3 scored 0 while M4 and S38 scored l in basal medium containing Nh4CI as the sole source of nitrogen. Addition of glutamate to NH4CI improved growth of C4 from 0 to 2; of CII from 0 to 3; of M4 from 1 to 3; M5 from 0 to 2 of P3 from 0to 2 and S38 from 1 to 2. All rhizobium isolated tested scored 4 in basal medium containing NG4CI and 20 amino acids. Effective strains C11 M5 P3 and S28 and less effective strains, C4 and M4 required available organic nitrogen as well as mineral nitrogen for good growth. L15, L15 and S13 can grow in a medium containing NH4CI as the only source of nitrogen. Glutamate, aspartae, valine, cystine and histidine were stimulatory to growth of the effective strains as well as the less effective strains, C4 and M4P3 was also stimulated by isoleucine, proline, tyrosine and arginine
