Title Statement
Qualitative analysis of drinking water in painted water tanks
Physical Description
16p
Summary, Etc.
Painting the insides of formerly galvanized water tanks is a common practice done by most tank owners. This study was done to determine the effects of paint, on iron water tanks, on the quality of drinking water. Two paints were used, one was the green quick-dry enamel (G), and the other, was yellow epoxy paint (Y). Galvanized iron tanks (S) were used as control. Each treatment had three replicates, for a total of 9 tanks. The qualitative analysis includes color, odor, density and pH. Six of the tanks were painted, then dried, for about three days. The tanks were then filled with water and were isolated for a month. Results showed a negligible change with respect to density of the water in the G tanks. The S and Y tanks showed a statistically significant change in density. The water in the Y tanks changed color from clear to golden, and also had a faint scent of the paint. The parts of paint Y that was exposed to water became slightly bloated. The water in the G tanks showed an observable, but slightly bloated. The water in the G tanks showed an observable, but slight, color and odor change, while the S tanks showed minimal change. The pH levels of G dropped; while Y increased, both significantly, and are within the range of the secondary standards. Galvanized iron appears to be the safest among the three, followed by the quick-drying enamel. The epoxy paint is unsuitable for painting the tanks
